BGS Submission Update One - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Yasiel Puig Base Blue Refractor Parallel ( 123 / 250 ) Now Graded and Slabbed a Mint 9.0

This is probably my biggest disappointment in all the submissions I have ever done with BGS. Of the 5 submissions this week this card along with the black Urias Bowman Chrome I was sure it would come back a gem mint 9.5 with an outside possibility of a pristine 10. Not only did I not get my pristine grade (not disappointed) BUT it didn't even come back as a gem mint. Just a measly mint 9.0. Are you kidding me? It did receive two 9.5 sub grades but centering and corners received 9.0's. Only .5 from a gem mint and I can't see why. Maybe I can see the reasoning with the corners as those can be finicky but centering I just don't see. I am a pretty good eye for that and measure all my submission cards before I drop them off.

Now I feel a little hesitant and am questioning my pre-grade ritual but I will not let this card sway my belief that I for the most part can trust my instincts on submissions. I will put that to the test with the next batch.

Well I now have a mint blue Puig but would have loved to pair it with my gem mint blue autograph Puig from the same set. Sigh...

"Just" a mint card
= (

As I was writing this I went over the card again and just couldn't believe why it didn't receive a gem mint grade. Well I then decided to turn the card over.

Well, there's my problem. I "forgot" that centering applies not only to the front but to the back of cards as well. BGS is more lenient on centering on the back as they will go as far as 60/40 and still give it a gem mint grade but my card here on a good day would barely rank a 65/35 as it looks more 70ish/30ish. So that is why I didn't get the grade I felt it deserved.

Makes me feel a little better knowing that I didn't miss anything on the front but I am annoyed at myself for forgetting to check the back. Lesson learned.

Card of the Day - 2012 Bowman Chrome : Joc Pederson Base Blue Refractor Autograph Parallel ( 62 / 150 )

It's educated guessing/hoping/gambling time once again on the blog.

I already have/had Joc's Bowman Chrome card in gem mint as recapped HERE . But I have always wanted to get my hands on the more limited and blue refractor for my collection. Well the graded copies are too high for my tastes so I decided to sell my BGS graded one and try my luck on a raw blue version.

With my recent hit and misses on BGS submissions this is a slight gamble. All that on top of the fact the seller of this card on eBay is new to the community and has a grand total of 1 feedback. It was an even swap for the graded base refractor for this ungraded blue refractor. Now when I head back to Frank and Sons I will submit this with a few others and hope for the best.

I have submitted 10 cards in the last month and 5 have come back as gem mint 9.5's. A 50% rate. Of those 5 that did not grade out to 9.5 at least 2 I thought were sure shots so I am slightly second guessing myself on personal grades BUT with that said I believe this card here is a great candidate to secure a gem mint 9.5. We shall see. At worst a 9 blue is more valuable than a 9.5 base refractor so there is that.

Card of the Day - 2013 Topps Five Star : Mike Trout Base ( 40 / 75 )

40 / 75

I love this picture of Mike. Reminds me of the Hulk. Most of the Topps cards have been using the same picture and not saying they haven't used this one but I myself have not seen it. Great intensity from the 22 year old.

I have been searching high and low for this card for months. Due to the general demand of Trout cards and the fact that this card is limited to just 75 copies it hasn't come up for sale many times on eBay. I had to be patient but I wanted to lock this in before too long and he goes on a tear and this card becomes too much for me to acquire. Thankfully a seller had this on a BIN auction and he was receptive to working with me and after a few offers back and forth we finally agreed on a price that worked for the both of us.

Card came in and looks great. Didn't take it out of its sleeve as it looks good enough to be graded which I probably will do. With Trout in hand the only card left for my PC needs of the Five Star brand is Koufax. He has been even more elusive than Trout.

Card of the Day - 2013 Topps Finest : Mike Trout 1993 Retro Insert

Two projects done with the purchase of this one card.

Once again, these 93 retro inserts were my favorite insert of 2013 as they come from one of my favorite sets of all time. Obviously I needed all the Dodgers and one Mike Trout. The Dodgers were all acquired but Trout was still elusive for me. Considering this is from the Finest set which I was collecting all the Dodgers from and have finished that project I was down to one card left in general and it just happened to be this one. So I would be completing an insert set and then also the Finest set ( or least the ones I wanted ) when I got my hands on this card. Finally the search was over.

This card has yo-yo'ed on eBay from $35-$75 and every time it was on the low end I somehow missed out on it. There was no way I was going to pay $75 when book is $50. A BIN auction popped up one day and like usual there was a best offer option attached to it. Back and forth I went with the seller till we both agreed on a price. Card came in and if I decide to grade it I think it will be a gem mint but I can tell that it is slightly off centered on top. Maybe a 9 there and 9.5 everywhere else. No matter though I am glad that I finally have this to add to my collection. Great looking card.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Base Blue Refractor Parallel ( Multiple Players )

What seems to be a broken record on the blog this week is back one more time.

For the past few weeks I have been really cracking down on getting bulk wins on eBay of these blue beauties and another batch has made its way to me. This time it's 14 more needed for the set that I got my hands on. Once again the price was minimal as I will not pay more than $1 for any non star (common) and that applies once more here. The seller threw in a couple extra cards in the form of the mini cream of the crop insert set. They do not fill any of my collection needs but I am sure I can trade or contest them out at some point in the future but bonus cards are always appreciated here and I thank the seller for shipping them with my winnings.

The best part of this transaction is that the seller put each card in its individual rigid holder. I never expected that but it's a nice little bonus as now I don't have to use my own supply to store them.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Base Blue Refractor Parallels ( Multiple Players ) and Bonus Cards

I was back at it again scouring eBay for any and all deals I could get my hands on pertaining to the 2013 Bowman Chrome blue parallel set. I happened to come across this little group of goodies. The seller had all of this bunched into one auction which included 5 blue needs for my set. I had no need for the 3 refractors or the Cano X-Fractor but once again I saw it as an opportunity to load up on some trade bait and get some blue cards. The auction was of the traditional kind and I came out on the other side as the winner for a tidy some of just $5 delivered to me. Just a shade above 55 cents a card is music to my ears. The beat goes on for my quest of the 2013 Bowman Chrome blue set.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Adrian Gonzalez Base Blue Refractor Parallel and More Blue Friends

I have two projects that continue to take up my time but if I complete one of them it helps the other. I am still looking for all the Dodgers in blue refractor parallel form which is part of my bigger project of the whole 2013 Bowman Chrome set in blue form.

I have had a hard time getting my hands on Adrian as I have lost every time on the bay due to my set limit of no more than a $1 for his card. Past auctions at times have reached $3. Ha... not going there. Found yet another copy for sale but this time it was by a seller that also had 7 more blue chromes that I needed and I hoped to group them all into one big sale. Day came and I was the winner on all 7 and finally an Adrian Gonzalez blue card for a grand total of 8. Not a single one was more than a dollar, not even Adrian.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Base Blue Refractor Parallel ( Multiple Players )

To date the biggest lot buy of 2013 Bowman Chrome blue refractor parallels.

A couple weeks prior to this win the same seller had at least 30 of these cards up for sale and at the last minute I was outbid on every single one as the price went over my personal price ceiling. I want to complete this set but when it comes to the non stars I am not going to pay a premium . With that said the seller once again put up a lot of these blue beauties. And once again I was locked into them for a second time. Fortunately this time I came out the winner as I was the only one to bid on them. 20 cards to be exact and all had for less than 75 cents each.

20 down and hundreds to go.

Upcoming Player Appearance / Signing : Mike Marshall ( OF ) @ Harry's Dugout On September 13th, 2014

Even though the beginning of summer has just started we have our first official end of summer signing. Harry's Dugout will once again have former Dodger outfielder Mike Marshall in house for another meet and greet with fans. I met Mike back when he visited the store in July of last year as recapped HERE . Mike couldn't have been a nicer guy as he talked to everyone as a group prior to the signing and then individually as each person went up to get his or her autograph. To top it off I think he has one of the nicer aka legible signatures out there.

I was collecting signed balls back in 2013 but now that I am into photos I will for sure making a return trip for this signing. You can always expect the best from Harry's and with a 3 hour window for Mike I can assume there will be great stories told once again. For more information or pre-purchases please contact the store.

  • Baseball Cards - $15
  • Flats up to 11x14 - $25
  • Larger Flats, Baseballs, Mini Helmets, Caps and Figurines - $30
  • Bats, Jerseys, Equipment and Artwork - $40
  • Inscriptions - $10 or $15 for 2 IF on same item

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Base Blue Refractor Parallels ( Multiple Players )

The beat goes on for my quest to acquire the 2013 Bowman Chrome set in blue parallel form. Man I thought the 2008 SP Kemp project will take a long time. This one feels longer even with me picking up needed cards in bundles rather than one at a time.

I found a new seller to eBay and he had this lot up for a buy it now option of just $2.50. So for just a little over 40 cents a card I was able to pick up 6 needed cards for the set and if even included a Dodger (Jeremy).

Even though this project is picking up steam I know sooner or later it is going to get real hard as I have been picking up the non stars and haven't really gotten to the pricier cards yet. Trout, Machado, Myers etc are still needed and they have a higher price tag. Till then I will have to be content with small but cheap buys.

Card of the Day - 2014 Bowman : Julio Urias Base Blue Parallel ( 80 / 500 )

I still have a few more blue parallels to acquire of the Dodgers in this year's Bowman set but other than Puig, Julio here was the biggest one to acquire.

Though he had an autograph card in last year's Bowman Sterling set this year will contain his true rookie cards so prices will reflect that. When I won this auction prices were still not posted so I purchased this with a gut feeling of $3.50 being reasonable. That is the highest price I have paid for any of the blues this year and I think that it will book for somewhere around 5-7 and with that in mind my cost would be a reasonable purchase..

Bargain or not I am happy to finally add this young phenom's paper blue parallel to the collection. I am still on the lookout for the Bowman Black collection autograph which is numbered to /25. Lost out on a couple of auctions so the availability is lessening.

Card of the Day - 2014 Bowman : Brandon Trinkwon Base Silver Ice Parallel and Base Chrome Autograph

One card I needed and another I didn't.
I actually only needed and wanted the silver ice card as I was not looking for the base autograph.
Granted I didn't have the autograph but I wasn't looking to add it to my collection.
I made the decision this year that I would only be collecting the refractor and blue refractor parallels of the Dodger prospects when it came to autographs. I would hold out for the black ones too but not holding my breath as those could get pricey.

Well on a basic search for some silver ice cards I found the Trinkwon one that I needed on multiple auctions. Searching for the cheapest option these two popped up for just $5 combined and shipped. I expected to pay $1 or so for the silver ice but if I could score an autograph for just $3-4 I would be a fool to turn that down.. They were on a BIN auction so there was not bidding process and I had the two cards in hand shortly thereafter.

For now the base autograph is in my collection but I could easily be persuaded out of it or I may use it for a trade of my own.

Card of the Day - 2005 Bowman Chrome : Matt Kemp Base Blue Refractor Autograph Parallel BGS Graded 9.5 Gem Mint ( 108 / 150 )

I did not expect to win this card but I am happy that my very low bid was the high one for the auction. I already had this card in its refractor version as seen HERE but I always wanted to acquire the blue refractor version. I finally have.

Back in 2011 after getting my hands on the base refractor I set my sights on the blue version but then Kemp went and had his MVP caliber season and this card shot up in price and sometimes touching anywhere between $850 and higher. No way I was going to pay that amount. Even the ungraded versions where going for north of $500. Then 2012 and 2013 happened. Since I didn't spend that much on the base refractor it still can and did turn a profit. Well I saw this copy up on eBay and as always put it on my watch list and checked on it daily. Last day arrived and it was still at a very low price. Decided to put in a bid that was very low compared to sold copies of the same card that had closed in the previous two months. My bid made me the high bidder but I didn't think nothing of it and expected to be overbid at the end. 10 minutes left and I was still atop the heap. Auction closed and I had won the card that I have wanted for the past 3+ years at a very low price. I put my graded base refractor on eBay and sold it to cover 2/3 the cost for the blue one and paid the remaining balance from my auctions.

I always like to go over my journey when I upgrade my cards and this is another. I "bought" a "raw" refractor when the market was low and turned it into a BGS graded 9.5 and then sold it and acquired a blue graded one also at the low point in the market. It's all about timing and I fortunately was at the right place at the right time both times. Now if I can ever get my hands on a blue refractor of Kershaw's rookie card from Bowman Chrome that would be the cherry on top.

Base refractor is nice but blue is great

Mmm.... Gem minty

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Topps Chrome : Clayton Kershaw Base Blue Parallel plus Bonus Cards

I remember coming across this buy it now auction after I lost out on yet another blue Kershaw.

I had been trying to get my hands on a copy for a couple of months now and after yet another loss I went looking again and found this card accompanied by 2 other blue parallels from the same set. I had no need or any real interest in the other two cards but then I looked into what else he was selling and saw that he also had a blue parallel from the Bowman Chrome set I am still building.

He had the Kershaw and friends lot in one auction and the BC card in another as buy it now's but also with the best offer option. Might as well see how low I could get them. Sent in my offer on both auctions and he accepted without countering. The combined total ended up being a dollar plus less than the single Kershaw card I just lost out on the day before. Sometimes it pays to lose. Two set needs filled and two cards placed into the trade bait pile.

Whole lot of blue going on.

Card of the Day - 2014 Topps Museum : Adrian Gonzalez Silver Framed Autograph ( 7 / 10 )

I have been a fan of these framed autograph cards from the Topps Museum set since I returned to the hobby early last year but this is the first time I have been able to acquire one at a reasonable price. A lot of that is due to the restrictions I put on myself for this particular autograph set.

These cards all come with a silver signature which other than blue is my favorite color for signatures. A few problems come with these framed Museum cards though.

One, they come in 3 different frame colors. First is gold numbered to 15. I hate gold and even if I didn't a silver autograph wrapped around by a gold frame doesn't look good to me. So that color was out. Next up is a silver frame which is numbered to 10. Silver on silver is good and the most "plentiful" as the third color is black and would be my first choice but those are numbered to only 5.

And the second problem it seems with this brand that Topps got lazy and give the players dull and/or crappy pens as a lot of the signatures seem to be smeared or "dry". So I had to look for a nice signature on a silver or black frame which meant only 15 combined copies out there for me to search for at an acceptable price. Well I finally won one.

Adrian's cards seem to have escaped the crappy pen curse and with him being one of the "lesser" players in the sets his sales were lower than most. The card is number 7 of 10 so I took that as a sign as I should win this with 7 being my lucky number. Sold a very limited Dee Gordon card ( sold high at the right time ) which covered the cost of this Adrian card.

Card was in hand a week later and looks to be perfect in every way. My 1st and hopefully not last framed autograph card.

Seven of Ten

Contest Over At The Lost Collector

A new contest is being held over at The Lost Collector and a very unique one at that.

Instead of a card or ball or the traditional prizes that most of us bloggers give away he is going to give one lucky winner a sketch that he will do for you personally. You get to pick the subject and all you have to do is leave a comment and you are entered. I am already thinking ahead and hoping to win and have the actual player sign it as well.

Good luck to all.

Card(s) of the Day - 2014 Bowman : Whole Lot of Blue, Silver Ice, Home/State and Chrome of Multiple Dodgers

Silver Ice of Ryu, Greinke, Coyle and Crawford

The latest and probably last big purchase (volume wise) of 2014 Bowman has hit my mailbox. Wanted to put a big dent in my need list so I went back to one of my most reliable sellers on eBay to see what he might have in stock for me purchase. Still needing over 30 cards I was hoping to comply a big buy from him.

Silver Ice of Yimi and Ethier

At the same time I wanted to keep costs at a minimum. One reason I always go back to this seller is that he has most of his cards up on BIN auctions but if you are a past customer and you don't try to low ball him on offers he is receptive to working with you.

Blue parallels of Trinkwon, Crawford and Yimi

302 of 500

427 of 500

209 of 500

Needing all different types of parallels with the blue ones being a priority I searched his store and came up with a nice sized list of what I wanted. Every single one was a BIN auction with prices ranging from $1.50 to $2.25. Started shooting him the offers as fast as I could so he saw that I was intending to buy more than one.

Mini chromes of Yimi and Coyle

402 of 500

204 of 500

After about the 5th offer ( not even half way done ) I started to receive emails stated he was accepting my offers which gave me the go ahead in my head to keep going as I assumed he would accept them all.

Mini chrome blue parallels of Zach and Corey

129 of 250

235 of 250

In the end I sent him 13 offers for 13 cards and he accepted every single one of them. The grand total would have been an average of a $1 a card but Corey's blue mini was "pricey" which bumped up the average to a little over $1.40.

Reasonable I thought. As always I promptly paid him and he promptly shipped out the cards the next day and I had them in hand within a few days. Another smooth and painless transaction with a trusted eBay seller. The end is in sight for the 2014 Bowman set.

State of the Dodgers : Yet Another Social Rewards Update . . . 700K Crossed

In what may be the last blog entry with me on top of the social rewards heap. I am still number one in the world but that hold has been taking a beating the past few weeks. Since the last update I have lost a couple thousand off of my lead. The standings still have the same top 5 as everyone is basically standing pat or have just given up except for the second place person, one Scott Griffee. He has been cutting into my lead and I believe it is due to emails and/or facebook invites. I am just not going to sit here and do those. I put in my 12K+ points a day and let it be. Hence why I think this will be my last update with me in first. When I cross 800K in two and half months or so I expect to be in second.

With all that said maybe that will bring me some luck. Once again, another handful of promotions have come and gone and I have yet to win anything. It is all based on luck but damn, you would think through almost a year and half of this and I would have won something. It is what it is. Maybe the Dodgers will have a meet and greet with Sandy Koufax and Clayton Kershaw in the future and God will say that is why you haven't won and here is your prize. A fan can dream can't he?

Nonetheless, I still enjoy logging in everyday and punching in my hashtags, photos etc. in the hope that I will win something someday. It could happen !

Still in 1st but for how long?

Card of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Corey Seager Base Photo Variation

My Seager collection is starting to grow and with this addition I was able to fill two different set needs with one card.

Still searching to complete various projects pertaining to the 2013 Bowman Chrome set and the variations are one of the hardest as there are just not that many to bid on.

I've seen Corey's in graded form and while I did send an offer to a seller we could never agree on a price. He was/is banking on Seager being a stud in the future which I hope he is. Found this ungraded version on a BIN with a best offer option but the seller was asking $70 for it. Way too much but I sent him what I believed to be a low ball offer at more than 65% of what he was asking for. He obviously didn't accept but surprisingly he sent a counter of just a couple dollars over what I sent him. I could have played the nickel and dime game with him but since we were that close in offers I accepted his and finally won my photo variation of Corey.

Card came in great condition and is a candidate for grading if I so chose to go that route.

Attended Game Recap : QUAKES 9 @ Jethawks 3 On June 14, 2014

My wife's friend informed us a month or so ago that he wanted us to come up and visit him up in Lancaster at some time in the future. Well my baseball mind thought to myself why not couple that with a Quake game. Off to the schedule I went and saw that the Quakes would be in town on this last weekend prior to the Single-A All-Star break. Well, well, well. Bought 4 tickets for the group and went about planning my autograph want list. Since the Jethawks are part of the Astro organization they have 2 top prospects on their team, Mark Appel and Carlos Correia. So on top of the Quakes I wanted I also wanted to get their autographs but with no pictures of them I would be going with the black baseballs for their autographs.

Rumor has it that this would be Appel's last game with the team as he will be promoted to Double-A which is also the same rumor for the Quakes Corey Seager who is tearing up the league and if not now will soon be shipped to Double-A as well. Two players that I needed before they were gone.

Wife dropped me off at the park as she went to go get her friends and I headed to the line in front of the stadium as it was Altuve bobblehead giveway night. By the time they let people in the line was about 200 deep. Thankfully I was about the 20th in line.

Not into bobbleheads anymore but that is one cool looking Star Wars Jedi Altuve here. Noticed that people are asking $60 on the bay for him so I will be underselling this bad boy for some pocket change.

Quakes Dugout

A little less up to date than the screens at Dodger Stadium

Time to acquire some autographs.
I was prepping my materials when I heard a fellow fan say he walked by Julio Urias. I looked around and saw him and a bunch of fellow Quakes walking through the concourse towards the bullpen/locker area. They were not in their uniforms yet but in T-shirts with their numbers on their back. Easy to spot him and I had my photo ready.

Perfect placement of his signature. My first in person autograph of the young phenom. He was still signing for fans and since their were not too many I pulled out a black ball to see if I could acquire another autograph.

Not as nice as the photo but still love the look of it. Two autographs and I was done with Julio for the day. These are for my personal collection but when I go to Rancho next month I will be acquire an autograph for good friend Janet. I didn't forget about you.
= )

At the same time of Julio signing I ran into Josh aka Dodgerbobble. He also made the trek up for some bobbles and autographs. His partner and crime Franz was also in tow and with the Quakes no longer around we headed to the Jethawk side to acquire some autographs. I wanted my two ( Appel and Correia ) and be done but they had more on their wish list. Appel walked by and said he would be back as he had somewhere to go. More on that later.

One by one the Jethawks came out to do stretches and warm up and signed for fans. I was still holding out for Carlos. He finally came out and with no more than a handful of us he started to sign.

He was giving his "short" signature today. I didn't care as an autograph is an autograph. This one came out much better than Julio's on the ball. Thank you again Carlos for stopping and signing for us.

I waited for a little to see if Appel would walk back but I decided to head back over to my seats on the Quake side as I saw Seager was out and warming up now. I was able to see his number from 300+ feet away. More on that later as well.

Made my way back there and saw that Appel was there.

He was doing a Q and A with fans. Good speech. I enjoyed listening. Problem was that I wanted his autograph and in the corner of my eye I saw Seager as well. Wanted both but had to play it smart and no leave on area to get one and miss out on the other. To complicate matters I saw Matt Herges down the line and wanted his autograph as well. I risked it and ran down there to see if I could get a quick signature.

Perfect timing as when I approached him he was finishing up with a young fan and promptly signed for me. Thank you Matt for finally signing for me. Also turned down in Rancho.

Interesting "autograph" to say the least.

Back to Appel I went. He was finishing up his speech and as soon as he did a group of us approached him for autographs. Very cordial and nice about it. He did stick to one per person except for Franz as he got a second one once he asked for a personalization.

Nice signature. Would have came out great if he didn't have to shrink signature to add the bible verse. I am not going to complain as I have no problem with players putting those on signatures. Thank you for signing and speaking once again.

Back to my seats I went and Seager was finishing up his warm ups and he had to walk right by seats to get to the dugout and I asked him for an autograph on a photo.

As in Rancho he signed with a smile on. Thank you for the autograph Corey.

I was actually planning to graph post game but I actually got all the signatures I wanted pre-game. That is a first. That has never happened for me. Man, I love minor league baseball. So much easier to acquire autographs. With that behind me it was time to watch some baseball.

During the course of the game Franz and I ended up each acquiring a ball from a Quake player.

During the game a Quake player threw a ball into the stands and it bounced around among fans until it landed into my wife's hands.

Even though Julio is a starting pitcher I knew he might be called in as a relief pitcher today and thankfully he was as I got to see first hand how he pitchers. Pretty damn good.

Quakes game was about over so we took some pictures of the four of us.

Just the wife and I.

As stated earlier I picked up all the autographs I needed pre-game. BUT, as we were leaving I noticed that Corey was the last Quake in the dugout and fans were leaving and not bothering him for an autograph. Well I had one last picture of him ( always bring back up ) so I asked him for another autograph. He was more than happy and told him it was nice to watch him play and wished him well in Double-A. He laughed.

Second Seager autograph of the day.

To long time readers of the blog you might have noticed that I am now wearing glasses. I knew I needed them for awhile but I continued to delay the inevitable. When my wife went in to get her eyes checked Dr. Liu checked mine and said I needed to finally get glasses. I knew this day would come. Dr. Liu did a tremendous job on the prescription and I am now able to see player's numbers from far away and balls that are heading in our direction. Protect the wife !!!

If you have any eye issues Dr. Liu can help you out. Tell him Dodger Penguin sent you. Thank you once again Dr. Liu for helping me see the world in 1080i high definition.
