Card of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Matt Kemp Base Blue Refractor Parallel ( 219 / 250 )

The free fall of prices on Matt Kemp cards continues. Though I want and the team needs him to be 100% next year to succeed I do love that I can pick up his cards for pennies. This particular one only cost 99 pennies. Bowman Chrome will always be my favorite non high end card brand and I love to get the blue parallels of all the Dodgers. Looked like a seller was having a fire sale one day and I looked in his eBay store and he had this one for just 99 cents. I would do that all day long for any blue card of a Dodger let alone my favorite player. I look at it as I better enjoy the low prices now as once he heats up again the price will go back up. Until then, keep the 99 cent auctions coming.

Card of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Onelki Garcia Base Autograph Refractor ( 119 / 500 )

The gamble of buying newly released cards is that you might overspend value wise once prices are released a month or so later. I have done that a few times and here is another example.

A week or so before I won this card, I won Onelki's base autograph for $6. Not a big amount but at the time I regretted putting in my bid that high. Then I went and won this card for $2 less than the base even though this one is the numbered refractor version which is "rarer" than the base. You win some you lose some but I think it evens out in the long run. I believe I got a bargain on the refractor so that wipes out the bad taste of my self perceived overspend purchase on the base version. Both are nice pick ups but this one I am more satisfied with.

Contest # 3 Results

The third contest from Dodger Penguin ended this past Friday with Jesse winning the cards with the winner take all question four. Jesse runs his own blog as seen HERE . Congrats to Jesse and thank you to all that participated in the contest. Next one will be up later this week and will be of the random.org variety. May everyone have a happy and safe New Year's.

Question 1 : Both played for the Dodgers and Twin and both used as relievers
Question 2 : Angels Flight in Los Angeles
Question 3 : Dick's Last Resort in San Diego
Question 4 : Every single one but one.

Card of the Day - 2013 Finest : Zack Greinke 1993 Retro Insert

Its throwback time. Back in the 90's I loved the 1993 Finest set. I remember the ridiculous pack price and the choice of whether to take off the protective plastic that was on each card or leave it there but have wording on said plastic which obstructed the picture on the card. It was a pricey set and I only ended up buying a few packs as I didn't have deep enough pockets to pursue the set. For the 20th anniversary Topps has put together an insert set in this year's Finest set with current players featured on the 1993 design. I knew I had to get them and this is the first one I was able to get my hands on.

Zack did well in his first season with the Dodgers and with the late year releases there are more cards to chose from of him in Dodger blue. Saw him on the checklist for this insert set and went on eBay to see what the asking price was. Most were north of $5 which seems high to me but a seller had this one for just $3. I now have the first of the 1993 Finest Dodger retros. More Dodgers to come in the future.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Bowman Platinum : Matt Kemp Base, Clayton Kershaw Base and Gold Parallel, Adrian Gonzalez Base and Gold Parallel, Carl Crawford Base and Gold Parallel

As more and more sets come out during the year I have grown less fond of this set. Problem is that since I started it I want to finish at least the base set and possibly some of the variants. I am a completest and don't want to just abandon the pursuit of finishing the set even though my interest in has waned since I first started collecting it. One lesson learned though is not to try to collect every new set and stick to the ones I originally planned to collect only. Will apply that lesson to 2014 releases. This will probably my one and only time ever collecting Bowman Platinum.

With that said I went looking for bargains and found all of these on a buy it now auction from a single seller. He had them all up for a dollar a pop. Scooped them up and with that put a big dent in my needs to complete the set.

Cards look better in picture than in the hand. Go figure.

UPDATE THREE 12.27 - Contest # 3 : Trout, Golden Trout and the Tiger Who Would End Up Being Named MVP

It's contest once more. Wasn't planning on doing another one till the new year but what the hell. Up for grabs are 1 2013 Bowman Base Trout and it's golden parallel twin and then one gold parallel of Miguel Cabrera. I'm going through my extras so there probably be a couple more cards added. No promises though.

Once again, the same rules apply to win. Have to join the blog and you have to RT on twitter. Good luck to all. Considering its Christmas week a little adjustment as I will post only one question per day ( excluding Christmas day ) till there is a winner. No multiples during the day this time around. Here is the first question.

QUESTION # 1 : What TWO specific things do Drew Butera and Jamey Carroll share in common? A small clue is one is obvious while the other is not. Good Luck

A slight issue that I guess I caused as I didn't know there were actually three things that the two players had in common and one person tweeted me the answer but I didn't see it because I didn't follow them and Twitter has the stupid "rule" that you can't see tweets unless you follow them. Literally within a minute another person left a response on the blog that the tweet went out. You are both correct and even though I told the blog entry person they won the first question. So I am making a executive decision to be fair and to award them both a point but to also say that OTHER participants need to get FIVE points to win but they only still need FOUR. I am trying to be fair to everyone and remember each question is weighted so if you get the next two right you win anyways with 5 points. Sorry for the mix up and I hope to never have that happen again.

The answers I was looking for were they both played for the Dodgers and Twins and were called upon to be a spot reliever. The one thing I didn't know was that they were both born in the same town. Again, my bad.

Current Standings :

Valarauko - 1 Point
Kyle Brown - 1 Point

I am also adding one more card for now to the batch in the form of a 2013 Bowman Chrome mini of Corey Seager. I have a lot of them. LOL

Now onto the next question

QUESTION # 2 : What am I standing next to and I am not talking about the patch of grass? This questions is worth 2 points

CLUE : Point of Interest in City of Los Angeles

Valarauko aka Stalking PMS correctly answered "Angel's Flight" which is located in Downtown Los Angeles. The picture was taking during the 2011 Scavenger Hunt that I participated in. That's if anyone cares.
= )

So the updated standings are now :

Valarauko - 3 Points
Kyle Brown - 1 Point

Valarauko can wrap it up with the correct answer to the next question and with that here we go.

QUESTION # 3 : What California restaurant was this photo taken at? Two clues are that it is a city the Dodgers have played in ( notice the jersey of my table mate ) and the hats are a clue. Good luck to all.

Jesse correctly answered "Dick's Last Resort" in San Diego. If you ever go there ( which I recommend ) make sure you have a high and sarcastic sense of humor as it gets very raunchy there. A fun time.

With that the updated standings are :

Valarauko - 3 Points
Jesse - 3 Points
Kyle - 1 Point

Its anyone's contest to win.

QUESTION # 4 : Of the retired Dodger numbers how many are enshrined in Baseball's Hall of Fame?
Simple question.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Bowman Platinum : Yasiel Puig Base, Top Prospects Insert, Die Cut Cutting Edges Insert and 2013 Topps Chrome : Zack Greinke Base Black Refractor ( 94 / 100 )

I usually only buy from dealers with a detailed selling history on the bay but once in awhile I take one for the team and take a chance on a new seller and see if I get what is advertised. With this transaction I got that and more.

With all the new sets out I went back to fill some holes from earlier in the year issues and zeroed in on Bowman Platinum. When these Puig cards first came out they were all going for over $20 and I knew if I was patient I could get them later on down the road. The seller had only two cards pictured ( die cut and top prospects ) so I'm sure some people just passed on by thinking only two cards were offered when in fact there were three. Seller had the cards up for less than the cost of a blaster pack ( hat tip to Greg for his definition of cost ) with no action on the auction as the last day approached. With that said I won it with me being the only one to bid.

Usually that is end of story but the buyer emailed me after the auction and said since I was his first sale ever he wanted to give me a bonus and he asked if I collected Dodgers only. Said yes, and he said he would throw in Zack Greinke's black refractor of the then just released Topps Chrome set. Now that is a nice bonus as somewhere down the road I was going to hunt it down and now I didn't have to and probably saved at least 4-5 dollars. With the all the cards with a combined over $30 book value I know I received a great deal here.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Topps Chrome : Hyun-Jin Ryu X-Fractor, 1972 Style Refractor Insert and Base Black Refractor ( 83 / 100 )

It's Ryu time.

Topps Chrome ( along with most sets ) have a variety of parallels for each card within the set and I was on the look out for some for my collection and came across a seller that had 3 cards that I needed. The card that caught my eye at first was the black refractor and with only 100 made that makes it limited and harder to acquire. Going through his "store" on eBay I also found 2 more Ryu cards in the form of the 1972 insert card and a X-Fractor parallel. I wanted the black one the most but if I could also get the other two at a reasonable price then that would help with the combined shipping.

The black card was the first auction that was to end and I locked in on it and won it for a little over $4. Nice way to start. The Xfractor was up next and surprisingly it went higher than the black refractor but I still won it for close to $5. Last up was the 1972 card and for that I only spent 93 cents. Grand total was a couple cents over $10. Another great deal I believe.

Merry 2013 Christmas To One And All

No cards
No balls
No autographs
No whatever other topic today.

Today is a day that we celebrate the birth of Christ. It's not about the presents, its not about the money and its not about any other material things we want and seek out. Its about family, friends and being thankful for what have not for what we don't have.

I am going to be with my lovely wife, our family and friends and take in a movie and have a great dinner. Its about being with those who you love and care for. So to everyone that reads this today or in future, hope you have or had a very Merry Christmas and may you be with those who love you and if you can't may you be in their thoughts. Be safe, be happy and enjoy the day.

Card of the Day - 2008 SP : Matt Kemp By The Letter " D " ( 31 / 50 ) Autograph

The project that feels like it will take forever takes a small step forward with me acquiring the first " D" needed for the set. Need a total of two " D's " and with a print run of just 50 I would need to pounce if I saw one up for bid and that is what I did on this one.

I've been able to pick up other letters in the mid to high teens in cost but this seller had the " D " at a buy it now of one Jackson. Bargain hunter I might be but knowing that I need this and another " D " I just went ahead and purchased it and within a few days I received the card and added it to the collection. One " D " down with one more to go.

Trade with Fellow Blogger : Chavez Ravining ( Trade Number 1 )

Finally completed a trade with Alex from Chavez Ravining . He loves to run contests which I have not been fortunate enough to win yet but I am holding out hope for one that ends this Thursday. So I wanted to jump in and do my own contest and he happened to win my 2nd one as seen HERE . He is trying to complete a rainbow set of the Dodgers from this year's Topps Chrome set and I saw that he needed a purple Kemp which I had one to spare so I approached him on a trade and sent him the card with his contest winnings. I had nothing specific that I wanted back so I just informed him what I collected and send whatever which he did. I had zero 2013 Topps cards so everything he sent was useful.

An intense looking Zack, Crawford and a great picture of a bat flipping Hanley

Great start but that wasn't all

Another rookie card of Ryu, sure hands Ellis and thankfully long gone Cruz

Six down and then Alex tops it off with some Chrome

Mmm.. Chrome. I know I need the Topps Chrome ( 2 silver ones ) but I think I might have the Hanley which is fine as if I do I will pay it forward somehow.

Nine cards in total. A great package to get prior to Christmas. Thank you again to Alex and watch both our blogs for contests and insight. Trade two is in the process and should be up within the week.

Signed Ball of the Day - "Sweet" Lou Johnson ( ROMLB Sweet Spot w/World Series Inscription ? )

As shown HERE yesterday I went to Baldwin Hills Mall Saturday to pick up two autographs from a couple of former World Champion Dodgers. The first was Ken Landreaux which to me was the more important of the two due to the connection of the scavenger hunt he and I were involved in. Also showing up was "Sweet" Lou Johnson who won a title with the Dodgers back in 1965.

Lou was scheduled to start signing around 1 in the afternoon but he showed up early and started right away. I had jumped back into line right after acquiring the Ken autograph and was about 10th in line but when Lou started there was a good 50+ behind me. Who knew Lou would draw them in? While I waited I chatted up with a few familiar faces from around the autograph hounding world and when I finally got up to the table I asked Lou if he would be so kind as to put a World Series inscription on the ball so it would match my Ken one that I just got no more than 20 minutes earlier. He said sure but this is how I am writing it now. I said ok....? and waited to see what he put on there. Once he handed me the ball back I took a look at it and it said 41-65. What? 41 was his number while he was on the team in 1965 but that is one odd way to inscribe a World Series Champion. Maybe in his older years it is easier for him to do that instead of writing it out for everyone but its still odd in my eyes. Nonetheless, it was a free autograph and I am not going to complain about it. Thank you once again to the Dodgers and Lou Johnson for coming out and meeting up with fans and doing an autograph session.

What is Lou writing?

41-65? Huh? Ok then

Happy Birthday Steve " Mr. Clean " Garvey

A card in my own collection.

A blog I just came across is running a contest today which involves the birthday of one Steve Garvey. A man if compared to other players during his playing days should be in the Hall of Fame. Some year I suppose just not this one. The blog goes by the name GarveyCeyRussellLopes which has a lot interesting entries. Take a look.

Furthermore, happy birthday to a former Dodger great. A class act everytime I have met him in my life.

Signed Ball of the Day - Player Appearance Recap : Ken Landreaux ( ROMLB Sweet Spot w/World Series Inscription and Magazine )

This is the last weekend for the mall tour stops of the Los Angeles Dodgers. I happened to be out and about yesterday and thought I would pass by Baldwin Hills Mall to get two autographs that I have on bats but for some reason not on single signed balls. Also with Ken I wanted to get a magazine signed where I plus all the other winners of the 2011 Dodger Scavenger Hunt were are featured in an article.

I arrived at the mall around 12:30 which was about 30 minutes prior to the end of Ken's scheduled time. There was no one in line which made it real easy to ask for the two autographs that I desired. I gave him the magazine first and showed him the picture where we were all in and he remembered the event and we talked about it and how it was hectic and such. Ah good times. All of us winners are still in contact with each other and have met up for numerous games. Club #104 still lives and thrives.

I'm in the crease.

After the magazine I handed him a ball and asked him if he would be nice enough to put the inscription 1981 World Series Champs which he did. One final request and with that he was nice enough to take a picture with me. Once again, when the wife isn't taking the picture it always comes out blurry. Thank you once again to the Dodgers and Ken for coming out and signing.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Topps Chrome : Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw Refractors, 2013 : Bowman Platinum : Matt Kemp Base Gold Variant and Joc Pederson Top Prospects Insert

I got 5 on it.

And with that amount I was able to pick up these 4 cards. I wanted to get some more chrome cards from this year's Topps Chrome set and saw that a seller had both the Kershaw and Kemp refractors up for sale. He also had a copy of the gold variant of Kemp from this year's Platinum set I am still trying to complete. That is all that I needed but he also had a Joc Pederson Top Prospects Insert card from the Platinum set that I already had but I thought I could just pick it up for trade bait in the future and it would only cost me a handful of change.

All of these were of the buy it now variety on eBay so I didn't have to out bid anyone for them. Nice calm purchase for a few cards needed for my sets and all had for a bargain.

Joc card is up for trade if anyone is interested.

Card of the Day - 2007 Bowman Chrome : Chris Withrow Base Autograph

Working backwards in acquiring all the variants of Chris Withrow's rookies cards from the Bowman Chrome set I have finally been able to get the base version.

Having the blue, xfractor and refractor versions in hand all I needed was the base, unnumbered one to complete my set and it has been an irritating journey. I kept losing out on auctions left and right as I was only willing to pay a few bucks but kept getting out bid on it. Here comes another auction and I turn my attention to it like all the others. Unlike those though there was no action on them and with a minute or so left I put my bid in for 99 cents and actually won it at that price. With shipping included it was a tad over $3 delivered to me. Reasonable price for any autograph card as it was under $5. So with this I now have all "easier" parallels to acquire and basically done with Withrow's cards.

Card(s) of the Day - 2013 Topps Chrome : Yasiel Puig Base x2, Hyun-Jin Ryu Base and Refractor

Not very often but sometimes I go across the pond to Asia to pick up some cards and this nice little group of 4 from this years Topps Chrome set were acquired for a nice small price.

I love all things chrome and wanted to pick up some Dodgers. I had noticed that Puig's cards were closing anywhere between $5 to $10 and thought that was high for a base card. Found this auction that had 2 base cards of Mr. Puig and also had the base card of Ryu and its refractor variant. Always planned to get those as well sometime down the line but what better way than to kill more than one bird at a time. With the seller in Asia the auction didn't see much action which worked in my favor. In the end I won the lot for a nice tidy total of just $12.50. That comes out to only $3.12 per card. A steal in my eyes. Had to wait a couple weeks due to the distance but when they arrived the cards were in perfect condition. For sure, a great buy.

One of the Puig's is up for trade if anyone is interested.

Card of the Day - 2012 Gypsy Queen : Nathan Eovaldi Autograph

Man do I love my 99 cent on card autograph eBay auction wins. Add another one to that list as I acquired this little gem of Nathan Eovaldi for just a little over $2 with the shipping included.

Nathan is long gone from our team but wanted to pick up a few autographs of him depicted in Dodger blue. This one fit the bill and at a low price to boot. I have never been out bid for a Nathan card as there is hardly any action on the auctions but even I was surprised to get this one at such a low total price. Not going to complain though. A great looking autograph on a great looking card can't be beat.

Signed Ball of the Day : Alex Castellanos ( ROMLB Sweet Spot )

Alex has not played much for the big league Dodgers as he has spent most of his career in the minor leagues. He is already 27 years old and only received a handful of at bats this year. The Dodgers acquired him back in 2011 when they traded Rafael Furcal to the Cardinals and received Alex in return. Not much was expected from Alex and nothing much has happened. He was DFA'ed by the Dodgers and traded to the Red Sox but since then they have also DFA'ed him so it is possible that Alex might make it back to the Dodgers once again.

I have never been able to acquire his autograph at the stadium though he was never high on my list but I still wanted the autograph due to him being a Dodger. One day I was on eBay and saw this PSA authenticated baseball for $20. Now to me that was probably a tad much for an Alex autograph but I wouldn't have to use a ball out of my inventory and the signature was already authenticated so I didn't have to worry about it being real or not. I pulled the trigger and bought the ball and had it in my hands within the week. Glad to add another Dodger to the collection. Big name or small fry they all wear the blue and I support them all.

A nice free Christmas gift to me from Topps. Thank you to Topps for running the promotion and I will post the results of the box when it arrives and will put the extras that I don't need into more of my own contests. Card of the Day - 2013 Bowman Chrome : Onelki Garcia Base Autograph

The first Bowman Chrome card from this year's release has arrived and it is an on card autograph of one of the newest Dodgers, Onelki Garcia.

I didn't know much of Onelki's back history prior to this year and totally forgot about him until he received a late season call up to shore up the bullpen. I went to look for his cards and found out that he had an autographed rookie card in this year's Bowman Chrome set. Autographs and chrome are a great combination. So off to eBay to get my hands on a copy for my collection.

Since the set was just released the prices were probably a little inflated considering the newness of the cards. I missed out on a few auctions but finally settled in on this one and was the winner at the end for a few pennies over $6. All things considered that was probably a couple dollars overpay for Onelki but I don't regret the purchase and am happy that I have now added him to my collection.

Contest # 2 Results

The second DodgerPenguin contest ended yesterday after 3 questions with the same participants but a different winner this time. Alex from chavezravining fame pulled out the win by correctly answering questions one and three for the necessary 4 points to win the contest. That is two contests in a week but I will take a week or so off until I run the next one. Thank you again for all that participated and congratulations again to Alex for the win.

Question 1 : Denver, Co
Question 2 : Hong Kong
Question 3 : New York City

UPDATE TWO 12.12 : Contest # 2 : One Seager, Two Seager Three

I am now presenting contest # 2 which will be the last one for the year as I need to get prepared for Christmas. An early Merry Christmas to everyone. As you can see from the above picture the prize this time will be (3) mini chrome Corey Seager cards from this year's Bowman set. Why three you ask? Why not!
= )
You can have one for your own collection and the other two you can either trade or use for your own contest. Up to you. Either way enjoy the booty.

Same point structure is in place and will always be in place for the contests but a little different take on the questions this time around. We are going to play a little "Where was DodgerPenguin?" when this picture was taken. I have traveled to multiple cities for baseball games and I also have gone to other countries for vacation. So it will be a place I have visited. If you have read the blog or have seen conversations on twitter you may or may not have a good idea where each picture was taken. With that said here is the first one. Good luck to all and everyone have a great day.

Ahh..... It's a big blue bear!!!

Alex correctly guessed that this was taken in Denver, CO. He luckily drove through the city so he remembered it from his travels. Good for him. So that is one point for him and now on to the next picture.

After a long hike I found this statue

Jesse quickly guessed this one correctly with Hong Kong. Now onto the 3rd picture of the day with updated standings below

Jesse : 2 Points
Alex : 1 Point
