Player Appearance / Signing Recap : Tommy Lasorda @ Dodger Stadium On April 18, 2015

Dodger fan's favorite, former manager and always pleasant to talk to Tommy Lasorda made an in store appearance at Dodger Stadium this past weekend to promote his current book "My Way".

He "co-wrote" it with his former assistant Colin Gunderson who was also on hand to sign copies for fans. I wanted to pick up a copy sometime this year and just had to find the right opportunity to do so and this was that time. I wanted to go to the Grove a week earlier but life happened as I was needed elsewhere. I learned of the signing earlier in the week and thought if I could piggy back it with an actual baseball game then I could kill two birds with one stone. I had yet to attend a game this baseball season so it gave me more reason to want to go this Saturday so I could take in a game and get an autographed book from Tommy.

With the Dodgers hosting the Rockies with no stadium giveaways I thought I could score a deal on some tickets to the game which I did and ended up with front row seats in the Loge level. Great view to a great game as the Dodgers beat the Rockies 6-3. It felt great to be back for live baseball. It's been too long. 

As a season ticket holder (STH) I can enter the stadium an hour prior to the general public and I planned to use that perk to get in line early as I expected a crowd for the Dodger great. The signing was scheduled to begin at 4:30 and last for about an hour. The wife and I were in the stadium at 3:15 and once 4 p.m. approached we headed towards the left field New Era store. Not as many people as I expected as we were about 20th in line. Tommy and Colin arrived 10 minutes earlier than scheduled and promptly started to sign for fans.

Like a few other people in line I tried to get an outside item signed and was denied by four different people (security, store employee, handler and Colin himself). Oh well, guess I will have to hit up Tommy in Arizona next year. Approached the table where they were sitting and Tommy happened to be in a good mood this day (I'm going to attest that to this being a public event where he has his best face on) as he even engaged with a few fans. They both signed my copy and Tommy was eyeing my black and white photo I had hoped he would sign and wondered if he would ask to see it and maybe sign it anyways. It wasn't meant to be. I said my thank yous to both gentlemen and headed back to the stadium.

Surprisingly as I left there were maybe an additional 20 people lined up for the signing and it was only 4:40. I expected a bigger turnout but maybe because of the late announcement people were unaware.

Player Appearance / Signing Recap - Paul Lo Duca @ Dr. Liu's Optometry On March 21, 2015

This past Saturday Dr. Liu was hosting yet another former Dodger for a in store appearance at his practice and I knew I would make my way over there. Paul Lo Duca was the player and even though I met him at Harry's Dugout about 20 months ago as seen HERE that was when I acquired all my autographs on baseballs. Well that was then and this is now and I no longer had that ball and needed to pick up Paul's autograph on an 8x10. Also since I was heading out there I swung by Whittier to complete a trade which I will post about tomorrow so this trip was made to accomplish two things.

The signing was scheduled to start at 3 in the afternoon and even though I knew I wouldn't be there early I wanted to be there by 3:15-3:20. That did not happen as every single freeway from the 405,105,60 and 91 were backed up. Where was everyone going? After the trade was completed (which I was a little late to as well) it was already 3:20. I did not arrive to Dr. Liu's until 3:52 and when I got out of the car I noticed a line of about 15 people. It was busy. Good for Alex. I walked up to the door and said I wanted to speak to the Dr. and got in and chit chatted with him and he said that Paul would accommodate everyone. Paul always has been fan friendly and it shows once again. I picked a photo to my liking and hopped in line.

Approached Paul and he took notice of the shirt that I was wearing and said he believes UCLA has a chance. We shall see on that but that is more proof that Paul is a good guy. He initiated the conversation not me. Placed the photo down for him to sign and then asked for a picture with him which he obliged.

Another autograph reacquired for my collection has been obtained. Thank you again to Paul for coming out and signing for the fans and thank you as always to Alex Liu for hosting the event and having it run so smoothly just like all past events. Season is about to begin and can't wait for more in store autograph events.

Reminder of Paul Lo Duca In Store Meet and Greet @ Dr. Alex Liu's Optometry

This Saturday Paul Lo Duca is making a return visit to the south land and doing an in store autograph appearance at Dr. Liu's Optometry practice in Rowland Heights. 

Just a thought for you all as I am thinking of doing it myself. Next month Eric Gagne is making a rare appearance at Frank and Sons and he and Paul were a great pitcher/catcher tandem for years and there are many great photos of both of them. You can get Paul's autograph this weekend and in two weeks you can complete the mini project and get Eric's. Just food for thought for all you autograph collectors. 

Prices remain the same for Paul which are $20 for any item you bring in which also includes a photo op with him and if you want an inscription it will only put you back an additional $5. Feel free to contact the office if you have any questions.

Football season is officially over so let baseball season begin. And with that, it's time for more in store autograph signings of current and former players. Dr. Liu is hosting his first Dodger in store signing of 2015 next month on Saturday the 21st when former Dodger Paul Lo Duca makes a return visit to the area.

Price is simple and reasonable as it is $20 per autograph on any item you Paul to sign. The doctor always has photos to purchase at the store as well if you do not have anything in your own collection to have Paul sign. Inscriptions are an additional $5. With your purchase you also receive a free photo op with Paul.

Player Appearance / Signing Recap : Chan Ho Park @ Frank and Sons On January 17th, 2015

As a lot of you remember back in the 90's the Dodgers had an international pitching staff. A Japanese here, A Mexican there and then you had the winning est Korean pitcher to ever player in the MLB, Chan Ho Park. It being the 90's I was not collecting autographs just yet so I never was in search of his. A couple of years ago I finally did acquire Mr. Park's autograph for my collection in ball form. As with all the rest his got sold last year so he was on my list to reacquire but he doesn't do many in public appearances. He did show up at Dodger Stadium last year but I couldn't attend the game so he remained on my to reacquire list. Thankfully he finally came back to town for a public signing and I made sure that I would be able to attend.

Chan Ho was scheduled to appear at Frank and Sons yesterday and I arrived right at 10 when he was supposed to start signing. Hopped in line which put me as number 20 ish as I pre purchased my ticket so I wasn't in the general group but the VIP. Chan Ho showed up about 20 minutes late so I killed time by talking to familiar faces in line. Once he arrived though the line moved quickly. I had two items to get signed though only one was for me. My friend Austin is in Hawaii on a nice family trip (lucky guy) so I was getting a card signed for him. Though not for me here is the card :

Nice blue sharpie auto. I think it came out pretty good. For my item I went with an 8x10 and thankfully I went with this one and not the one I originally was planning. I wanted to have him sign a photo of him kicking Angel pitcher Tim Belcher in their infamous fight back in 1999. It was announced right before he started signing he would not sign anything depicting that incident. So thankfully I had this one for him to sign.

The wife pointed out that Mr. Park seems to want the focus on his crotch area. I didn't notice it till she mentioned. Good eye Mrs. Javier.

I had heard about Chan Ho not being the friendliest person and he did not disappoint. When I approached the table where he was signing I said hello and asked him to sign on the green area of the photo (which he did not). During the whole time of him signing the two items he never looked up and when he was done I said thank you but received no acknowledgement back. As long time readers know that is a major pet peeve of mine especially when it is a paid signing. A little "you're welcome" and courtesy smile would go a long way with fans. None the less, thank you to Chan Ho for showing up and signing.

Player Appearance / Signing Recap : Steve Sax @ Dr. Liu's Optometry On December 6th, 2014

Began the year by meeting Steve Sax for the first time and now I am ending the year with meeting him one more time.

Back in February Dr. Liu hosted a Sax in store signing and I ventured over to the office for the very first time. You can read the recap HERE . How things can change in a little under a year. 10 months separate February and December and in that time I went from collecting primarily signed baseballs to almost stopping that completely (aside from the occasional black ball) and moving onto cards and getting 8x10's signed. With that said I sold off the Sax ball and was now looking to replace it with a signed photo by him. I originally thought I would do the "traditional" baseball photo and then I remembered a project I thought I may or may not do. Enter The Simpsons.

Back in 1992 The Simpsons did the baseball episode entitled "Homer at the Bat" which is classic to this day among fans. Below is the Mr. Burns baseball team that he put on the field during that episode.

As you can see there are 9 former baseball players. Being in Los Angeles I believe I have a good chance at getting Mattingly and Scioscia at some point this year. Canseco should be obtainable once his finger is better from being shot off by Jose himself. Ha Ha. The others are going to be hard but that leaves us with Steve for now. What better way to start the project than with the former Dodger? Off I went to Dr. Liu's with photo in hand to get the first autograph of a project that let's be real probably won't ever be completed. Won't stop me from trying though.

Headed off to the office and I barely made it as it was close to 3;45 but it looked like everyone that wanted Steve's autograph had already been there and gone as there was no line. I paid my fee and promptly placed my photo in front of Steve and now I have the first signature for the photo. Said thank you to Steve for once again showing up and signing for fans and I was on my way.

Steve Sax is making a return visit to Dr. Liu's Optometry next month for an in store autograph appearance.

Stever has been there before and it went smoothly and you can guarantee this one will be just the same. As always the price for the autograph is reasonable as Dr. Liu does his best to keep costs low. $20 for any piece will get you the 2x World Series Champion's John Hancock. Player Appearance / Signing Recap - Don Sutton @ Harry's Dugout On Saturday November 8, 2014

This past Saturday Harry's Dugout welcomed in former Dodger and Hall of Fame member Don Sutton for an in store autograph appearance.

Even with baseball season officially over and even though I have an autograph card of Don I wanted to add a black ball to my collection considering Don is in the Hall of Fame that makes him worthy in my eyes to use a black ball. I also planned to meet twitter friend Austin aka buddha_hat for a trade we worked on during the week. More on that tomorrow.

I arrived at Harry's around 12:30 as Don was scheduled to sign for two hours for fans. I didn't think I needed to be there at thee very beginning considering the length of time he was going to be there. When I arrived there were about 10 people in line so it was perfect timing. Went inside to purchase my ticket and saw that Don was chatting with fans and taking pictures. Always nice to see the athletes conversing with fans and not just signing and moving onto the next autograph. Eddie the owner was busy so I didn't get a chance to talk to him too much but there will be a former Dodger appearing in January who just happens to be a former World Series Champion. Can't wait. Headed back outside to the line where I met up with Austin and completed our trade and within 5 minutes we were both back inside to get our autographs.

I did not bring a gold paint pen as Eddie informed me that they would be well stocked with them so I trusted it would not streak and I wasn't disappointed. I think it came out perfect. Another black ball for the collection. PSA was also present so I purchased their COA just in case I ever have to sell the ball. Hope not. After Don signed I asked if he wouldn't mind a picture with me and he happily obliged.

If you notice on his vest it shows his current employer the Braves. Too bad we couldn't have him slip on some Dodger gear. Probably would have gotten him in trouble. Ha Ha.

Another successful day at Harry's Dugout. Thank you again to Eddie and his crew for having Don in and thank you to Don for signing for the fans. I look forward to the next signing at Harry's.

Tyler is only 22 and with his own personal future seemingly bright and promising what better place to grow than being with this 2x Stanley Cup Champion organization?

Player Appearance Signing Recap : Joc Pederson @ Frank and Sons on September 6, 2014

Yesterday I attended the Dodger's super prospect Joc Pederson's first public autograph appearance that was held at Frank and Sons. I expected a decent turn out but wasn't expecting the big crowd that did show. I, smartly, purchased my ticket 2 months ago the day after they went on sale. The first 50 were given VIP status which came in real handy as you can see from this photo.

The promoter (Honabach and Sons) did not expect this turn out as well as I was about 10th in line and he came up and told his handlers there would be no photo ops even though it was advertised. Honabach has had issues with past signings when they become too big for them to handle. If anyone remembers Kemp's in 2011 you know what I mean.

I estimate there were at least 200-250 and with Joc only signing for one hour I know not everyone would get their autograph. Again, thankfully I was in the VIP line which allowed me to jump over almost everyone. Will call is another joke but I won't get into that but again if you have attended these shows before you know what I mean.

Joc showed up on time and proceeded to sit down and sign. There are basically three big prospects in the Dodger system. They are Julio Urias, Corey Seager and Joc Pederson. I have met the other two and now Joc finishes up the tri-fecta. Maybe Joc was overwhelmed by the situation and probably didn't expect to see the sea of people but to me and the ones around me he wasn't that engaging to the fans.

Maybe it's his age (22) but I do appreciate a look in my eyes and hi back if I say hello and welcome to the club. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt this time. Twice is a pattern Joc so don't do it to me again. Ha Ha.

I ended up buying a photo at the show as it was better than the one I brought and ended also buying another ticket to get a black ball signed. Sadly my pen dried up just a tad when he signed the photo so it's a tad off but not too bad.

All in all it was a good experience and it was nice to meet the young budding star.

Player Appearance Recap / Signing : Howie Kendrick @ WSS Shoes On July 26th, 2014

The wife and I were heading out to Ontario to meet up with our friends and family and to take in a Quakes game later in the day. I obviously was in the autograph mode and was ready to acquire some more autographs at the Quake game. More on that on the next blog entry.

While I was looking at movie times ( saw Lucy which was a very good movie and not very long if your attention span is short ) a couple days earlier and I saw that Howie Kendrick was doing a public signing at a shoe store in Anaheim right off the 91 and 5 freeways which meant it wouldn't be that much out of the way on our trip to Ontario. I have seen from recent past signings with Howie that the lines haven't been overly long and that some people went back into line and got more than one autograph. With the signing scheduled to begin at 10 or so what I was told, I thought if we left at 10 and arrived around 10:30ish that the line would be short and I could hop in and out in about 15 minutes flat considering what I have heard. Ran it by the wife to see if she was OK with that and she said sure ( great wife, thank you again, plus I think it doesn't hurt when it's an Angel since she is fan of theirs ). Packed and ready to go we left at 10 on the dot.

We arrived a tad after 10:40 and as we drove by there was a crowd in front of the store. Would say at least 150 people but there was no real line. Wife and I both thought that it was just people milling around after the signing and we could still go there and get the autograph and leave. Parked and walked towards the store and we informed that no this was a "line" waiting for Howie who's signing was scheduled to start at 11. Uh... OK? I debated on leaving but an employee of the store said if you buy $20 worth of merchandise you can get into the VIP and pointed to the a line against a rail that had about 25 people in it. We both agreed why not and entered the store and ended up with 3 pairs of shoes. With shoes in hand we headed towards the VIP line.

Exited the store and went over to where the employee said the line was. It ended at the sidewalk and we ended up talking to a couple for about 5 minutes until a security guard approached us and asked were we there for an autograph. Responded yes and that we had bought merchandise so we were allowed into the VIP line. He agreed that we were allowed to stand in said line but that line was snaked around 5 more barriers that had no interconnecting sections to indicate that it was part of any line. So now instead of being 25th or so in line we were now at least 100th in line. Nice....not.

Howie arrived right at 11 and started to sign right away but what should have been a 15 or so minute wait now became a little over a hour wait. If I would have known how unorganized this event would be I would have skipped it and got Howie at a future event. I only expected to be there till 11 at most but now we were there till almost 12:15.

What I can say though is that Howie was engaging to everyone and was polite and cordial. I have heard he was this way but it was the first time I have experienced it myself as I have never been able to acquire his autograph before. I arrived at his station after about a hour in line and he signed a 8x10 photo that I brought which I think came out great. He also posed with me for a picture that was developed in a tent near by. A nice little bonus.

Event was highly disorganized with wrong information given out to people ( various start times given out were 9,10 and 11 ) and false promises were given to people that chose not to purchase anything and were regulated to a general signing area. When I left there was at least 100 more people behind me and Howie was only going to be there for another 30 minutes. Sorry to those people as I know they did not all receive an autograph. Thank you again to Howie for my autograph.

Upcoming Player Appearance / Signing : Joc Pederson @ Frank and Sons On September 6, 2014

Top ranked Dodger super prospect is scheduled to make his first public appearance on September 6th.

Scheduled as hopefully he is still with the organization.
Scheduled as he would have to be called up by then to do this signing.
Scheduled as he has to be healthy.

With that said I think the Dodgers will do the right thing and not trade him and he will be called up to the majors and will make this signing. Prices are reasonable right now. While I don't think Joc will explode onto the scene like Puig, Yasiel has made two public paid signings. 1st one was prior to the 2013 season and the cost for an item was $30. For hiis 2nd appearance the price jumped to $150. Get Joc while you can.

Player Appearance Recap : Drew Butera @ Sports Authority on July 12th, 2014

It has been a long time ( 8 months give or take ) since I attended a free public signing. Its been even longer if I don't count the Dodgers Mall Tour from last year. I used to attend almost all these signings whether they were at a cell phone store, Best Buy, Living Spaces or Sports Authority. Part of the reason is that the last few I would have been interested in were big name players ( Kershaw, Gonzalez ) which meant the lines were excessively long and I didn't stick around for a hour signing when I knew I wouldn't get an autograph. The other reason is that if wasn't a big name player I already had the autograph of whichever player was appearing. With that said it has been a very long time for me when it came to a free signing where I would have to wait hours for an autograph.

Well it was announced a little while back that Drew Butera was going to do an appearance at a local Sports Authority and if this was done last year I wouldn't have gone as I would not have wanted to use a ball for his autograph. No offense to Drew but I was wasting too many baseballs on bench and/or spot start players. If you weren't a starter or a retired player I wasn't going to use a baseball. Well with my ball purge I am now into 8x10's and I knew I was going to go the game on the same day and had baseline seats which ups your chances for autographs. But if I could guarantee an autograph why pass on it? I have this photo of Drew and Beckett from Beckett's no-hitter and want both players to sign so if I could get one half by spending a couple hours in line why not? I also have a picture of Drew pitching so I hoped to get that signed as well. Sometimes you can sneak a second autograph request in when the player is a big name.

Off to Sports Authority I went. I arrived around 8:30 for the scheduled 11 signing. I was about the 7th person in line. Of course when it started I ended up being the 13th. We all know how that happens. Drew showed up right on time and started signing. I still wanted the two items signed and hoped I could get it done. Sometimes the promoters start enforcing their one per person rules. My priority was the 8x10 of Drew and Josh Beckett. A nice 2 subject project for me.Hopefully I can get Josh to sign it as I don't think he will be with the team next year. Till then here is what it looks like without Josh's autograph.

My other picture I wanted signed was of Drew when he was called upon in a game early this year to pitch in relief. I think it is a unique picture to get signed as he being a catcher he probably doesn't see many of these to sign. He gladly signed it for me. Woo Hoo. Two autographs for the collection in the span of seconds.

First time All-Star Dee Gordon is making a return visit to Harry's Dugout in a couple of weeks. He was here a few of months ago and the turnout was great. Now that he has been selected to participate in the Mid-Summer Classic this event's attendance should be even better.

Prices as expected have gone up a tad but they are still very reasonable. Harry's will have 2014 All Star baseballs in stock for purchase so you can get Dee to sign the speciality ball with an inscription noting his accomplishment.

Upcoming Player Appearance / Signing : Mike Marshall ( OF ) @ Harry's Dugout On September 13th, 2014

Even though the beginning of summer has just started we have our first official end of summer signing. Harry's Dugout will once again have former Dodger outfielder Mike Marshall in house for another meet and greet with fans. I met Mike back when he visited the store in July of last year as recapped HERE . Mike couldn't have been a nicer guy as he talked to everyone as a group prior to the signing and then individually as each person went up to get his or her autograph. To top it off I think he has one of the nicer aka legible signatures out there. 

I was collecting signed balls back in 2013 but now that I am into photos I will for sure making a return trip for this signing. You can always expect the best from Harry's and with a 3 hour window for Mike I can assume there will be great stories told once again. Mark your calendars baseball fans. Jose Canseco is making another in store appearance at Harry's Dugout this summer. He is scheduled to sign for fans on Saturday the 9th of August for two hours starting at noon. He has made a couple of appearances at the store in the past and if you missed him the first go around here is another opportunity for you and if you are like me and need another item signed then head on back for another meet and greet.

Summer is here and Harry's Dugout continues to pump out in store athlete appearances. This time around this event will be held on a Sunday and feature not one but two former boxers who are also brothers.

The signing will run a hour and as always prices are very competitive. So if you are a boxing fan or just enjoy meeting athletes come down to this great shop in Whittier and meet up with fellow fans and a great store owner.
