Card of the Day - 1961 Sandy Koufax Base BVG Graded Excellent Plus 5.5

Here is yet another acquisition for my vintage Koufax collection but unlike the others that I have gotten my hands on this one took some time and a lot of bids with a final snipe bid at the end of the auction to lock it in but at the end of the day it was had for way under book.

Assigned value for this card in this grade is somewhere in the $70 range so anything at half or lower I would consider a win for me. The card's auction started with a penny asking price and the price went up from there with 14 separate bids. I expected some action but I guess when each bid was for about a $1 there would end up being a higher total of bids. My ceiling for the card was in the $30 range but the bidding never got to that as my last second bid put the winning total in the $27 range. Not too shabby for a 55 year old card in excellent condition in my opinion.

Another vintage gem of a great player for the collection.

Card of the Day - 1961 Topps : Wally Moon Base BVG Graded Near Mint 7.0

Look...at...that...BROW

Wally Moon was a good player in his own right back in the day but his claim to fame is that big bushy caterpillar laying above his eyes.

I had the good fortune to have met Wally a few years ago when he was promoting his book and he is one of the nicer players from the 50's/60's that I have had the honor a conversation with. He is highly engaging with fans and if you ever get the chance you should read his book which talks about his playing days and the atmosphere of the time.

I actually have never owned a Moon card prior to this one so it was nice to finally add him to the collection. With my new focus on vintage I wanted to have a Wally card finally but when I went looking there was only this one to bid on. I can only assume that is because he is not the biggest of players and the demand for this cards is not that high.

That grade of 7 must have been the clue to how much it would cost me to acquire this card as the starting asking price was $7 and with my bid being the only one that is what I won it for. Welcome to the collection Mr. Moon.

Card of the Day - 1961 Topps : Duke Snider Base BVG Graded Excellent Plus 5.5

Unlike with Koufax most Dodgers from yesteryear I am only looking for 1 card in my collection to represent them (unless something really catches my eye) and Duke here is finally in the collection as I played cat and mouse with this card's auction.

When I first saw this card, which happened to be on a very reasonable priced BIN auction, I had my sight set on a different card's auction which was due to end in 5 days. Both had a similar book value but I wanted to wait the other one out to see if I could score a better deal than this one. Until the last 20 minutes it looked like I was going to land the other card but then it jumped $10 in price and with that I went back to this one and clicked the BIN button and added The Duke to my vintage collection.
